When last we checked in on our little band they were setting up in their new rehearsal space and then spending multiple hours arguing over which songs to play. Click below if you need to review. Now that the fellas have settled on a set song list, the story continues…

Practice Schmacktice - Pg8 - Hammer stories by ER Flynn

Alas, poor Cubbie. When it came to groupies and girlfriends the lad didn’t have much luck.

It could have been the ridiculous perm. He was talked into getting that by a close friend who convinced him that it was a sure fire “Babe Magnet.”

Or perhaps it was his sparse, wiry, poor excuse of a mustache that he wore. It was the last remnant of his teenage desperation to show masculinity.

Or maybe it was the glasses. His myopia was so bad if he didn’t wear his glasses he risked falling off the stage at every performance.

Or maybe it was the braces.

Looking back it was probably the braces. His parents offered him the cost free promise of straighter teeth when actually it was a ruse to insure he stayed out of bigger trouble as a “Rock-n-Roller.” At least until he was out from under their roof.

Combine these fabulous attributes with nutty artistic sensitivities, plus a complete physical intolerance for most drugs except for alcohol, and you get an assured fish out of water when it came to playing in the Heavy Metal arena.

But as Cubbie found out years later, these are the perfect characteristics for someone who would toil away endlessly in the Advertising Business.

However the author digresses as he regresses.

Let’s get back on track with this tale.

Will the ladies manage to find the band in the basement? Will they get lost in the dark subterranean passages of it? Will June ever get to meet Cubbie and possibly find a love connection? Will the cartoonist ever stop torturing his audience with these Brenda Starr story lines?

Stay tuned! All these questions and more will be answered in the next installment of “Practice Schmacktice!”

By the way, this coming week I’ll be down in Los Angeles trying to improve my depleted Pacific Northwest Vitamin D levels. Due to this, the next installment of “Practice Schmacktice” might be delayed.

It all depends on whether or not the poolside bar can loan me a pen to doodle with.

I'm surprised at how much I love reading this comic one page at a time. The slower pace gives me more time to absorb everything instead of rising through to finish the story. I can't wait for the next post!

A fresh story that takes me way, way back. Man, Blue Öyster Cult is still a solid soundtrack to driving any car. And don't think I'm crazy, but Siri seemed super happy to play it when I asked her, because she likes me, and knows what's good. Also, super hard to get that umlaut over that O.
