I so feel for you on this. We have two puppers - Freddie and Elsie. Freddie is 12 years old, and we got him from a service that rescued dogs from shelters and held adoption parties to farm them out to people. We were lucky to get him.
He's had some issues as well, and while they're not as severe as what Zeke had, we're facing the fact that we might not have him for that many more years. We're dreading the day when we'll have to face things like this with him.
In Japan, pets are only put down as an absolute last resort in cases of terminal illnesses. Vets here are not wont to put them through endless batteries of tests and recommend surgeries, as the cures are often worse than the afflictions.
So if you're disgusted with the vet you took him to, I wouldn't blame you.
It's a small comfort, but Zeke gave you many years of joy and happiness. RIP to your lovely little guy.

Oh that little devil. But he's a survivor, especially when a host of incompetent vets are involved.
